    Sad, Sad State of Affairs

As the Leafs continue their victory march in one of the greatest tank battles ever, I believe we’ve pretty much hit a low point.

I’m 30 years old. As far as I can remember, the Maple Leafs have never been in such a sorry state.

There’s been plenty of speculation about who to blame, and . . . → Read More: Sad, Sad State of Affairs

How Bad Are the Leafs? Goal Scoring Edition

In the 1st of my multi-part series examining just how bad the Maple Leafs are, and have been, we’re going to look at the history of the NHL’s goal scoring elite.

    Consider the following.

Since 1918, a Maple Leafs player has led the league in goals just 9 times. An additional 3 times the league . . . → Read More: How Bad Are the Leafs? Goal Scoring Edition

    Thoughts on Burke

I took up Howard Berger on his Twitter request for feedback on Burke. It’s rather rambly, but such is life.

It’s really hard to put any analysis of Burke into the proper perspective because most people in the hockey world have very narrow definitions of success. By most traditional metrics, his tenure as the GM . . . → Read More: Thoughts on Burke

    The Monster Audition

Jonas Gustavsson will be an unrestricted free agent at year’s end, and all signs are pointing to the Leafs giving the Monster the rest of the season to prove himself.

James Reimer has yet to see the ice under new head coach Randy Carlyle, and with Gustavsson starting today in Washington, he will have twice . . . → Read More: The Monster Audition

    The Retchedness

There’s 1:00 left in the Leafs game against the Penguins.

Their season is effectively over, as they would have to go on a very un-Toronto-like run to qualify for postseason play.

Naturally, a promising looking rush goes offside at the Penguins blue-line.

    Game over, Leafs lose. Again.

This will mark the 7th consecutive year that . . . → Read More: The Retchedness

    Wilson on the Outs

Word is breaking that Ron Wilson is out as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

    It’s about damn time.

Wilson was the least likeable coach that I can remember. He was horrible with the media, and it’s obvious from where I’m sitting that his personality was at odds with that of his team. . . . → Read More: Wilson on the Outs

    Thought Experiment

I haven’t heard it yet, but apparently Damien Cox made some rather interesting comments (surely a first) on Prime Time Sports at some point last week. His claim boils down to the Vancouver Canucks being so far above the rest of the Canadian NHL clubs that you couldn’t assemble a team from the other 6 . . . → Read More: Thought Experiment

    More Rick Nash

Sportsnet is saying that Brian Burke met with Scott Howson in New York earlier today.

They also speculate that a trade between the Leafs and Columbus could involve James Reimer.

If the Leafs can get Nash and give up any combination (including all of) Kulemin, Schenn, Kadri, and/or Reimer, you make this trade without thinking. . . . → Read More: More Rick Nash

    Rick Nash “Sweepstakes”

I hate using the term “sweepstakes”. Mainly because the first time I saw that in regards to a trade was on HockeyBuzz with Eklund discussing the Matt Niskanen (or some equally irrelevant NHL player) sweepstakes.

Ugh…what a horrible time in my life.

    Now, Rick Nash.

The guys on HNIC’s Satellite Hot-Stove were talking about potential . . . → Read More: Rick Nash “Sweepstakes”

    Killing Time

For most of Ron Wilson’s tenure behind the Maple Leafs bench, he’s been absolutely roasted by the media for helping his team to the leagues worst penalty killing. The theory is that offensive output, wins, power-play success, and other metrics are reflections of the talent level, something typically thought to be outside the coach’s control. . . . → Read More: Killing Time
